ChatGPT has reached $3 billion in worldwide consumer spending on mobile devices, according to estimates from app intelligence firm Appfigures. The figure reflects cumulative spending on iOS and Android since the app launched in May 2023, initially as an iOS-only release.

Most of the revenue was generated this year. Consumers spent an estimated $2.48 billion on the ChatGPT mobile app in 2025, a 408% increase from $487 million in 2024. In its first year, the app generated $42.9 million, before expanding sharply as paid subscriptions gained traction.

The pace of growth sets ChatGPT apart from other top-grossing apps. It reached $3 billion in consumer spending in 31 months, compared with 58 months for TikTok. Streaming services such as Disney+ and HBO Max reached the same level in more than 40 months.

Among AI competitors, xAI’s Grok shows the closest revenue trajectory to ChatGPT after monetization began, though overall spending remains lower. ChatGPT’s mobile revenue is primarily driven by subscriptions, including Plus and Pro tiers, but OpenAI is also expanding monetization options through developer tools. Just recently the company launched an in-app marketplace across mobile and web that lets users discover and connect third-party apps for productivity, lifestyle, and entertainment. Analysts say ChatGPT’s current growth rate positions it to become one of the world’s largest companies by the end of the decade as demand rises for AI assistants, enterprise automation, and AI-driven commerce.
