Apple is preparing to upgrade Siri with a custom version of Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence model, according to reporting from Bloomberg. The deal is expected to cost Apple roughly $1 billion annually and will give the company access to Gemini-powered capabilities such as content summarization and planning tasks. The licensed technology will operate alongside Apple’s internal AI systems.
The custom version of Gemini reportedly uses 1.2 trillion parameters, significantly larger than the 150 billion-parameter model supporting current cloud-based Apple Intelligence features. Apple plans to run the model on its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, maintaining its existing privacy design while relying on Google’s scale for performance.
The partnership follows delays in Apple’s rollout of new AI-enabled Siri features. Earlier this year, Apple evaluated models from OpenAI and Anthropic before reaching an agreement with Google. Apple CEO Tim Cook has stated the upgraded Siri is expected next spring. While this collaboration strengthens Apple’s near-term AI capabilities, the company continues to invest in proprietary models that could eventually replace third-party systems like Gemini.
