Anthropic has been selected by the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) to build and pilot an AI-powered assistant for GOV.UK. The assistant, powered by Claude, will guide users through government services with tailored support, initially focusing on employment by helping people find work, access training, and understand available resources.
The project builds on a February 2025 Memorandum of Understanding between Anthropic and the UK government to explore safe deployment of advanced AI in public services. Anthropic engineers will collaborate with civil servants and developers at the Government Digital Service, ensuring the system can be independently maintained and aligned with UK data protection laws. Users retain control over their data, including the ability to opt out.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to integrate AI safely across the public sector. It complements other UK AI efforts, including a program funded by Meta that recruits experts to develop open-source AI tools for transport, public safety, and defense. Together, these projects signal growing investment in AI capabilities and governance within UK government services.
