OpenAI is planning to nearly double its workforce to around 8,000 employees by the end of 2026, up from approximately 4,500 today, according to a Financial Times report. The expansion is aimed at supporting continued growth in AI development and commercialization.
The company plans to allocate most new hires across product development, engineering, research, and sales. It is also increasing recruitment for “technical ambassadorship” roles, which focus on helping enterprises adopt and effectively use its AI tools.
The hiring push follows OpenAI’s latest funding round, which valued the company at $840 billion and included participation from major technology firms and SoftBank. The scale of expansion reflects rising demand for AI infrastructure, enterprise tools, and deployment support.
Internally, OpenAI has been prioritizing core product initiatives, reportedly redirecting resources to accelerate development amid intensifying competition, particularly from Google’s Gemini models.
The planned workforce growth highlights increasing competition for AI talent as companies scale operations globally.
