Sora – OpenAI’s generative AI video app – is now officially available for Android users in the U.S., Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The launch follows a breakout debut on iOS in September, where Sora topped the App Store and surpassed 1 million downloads in its first week. Expanding to the Google Play Store is expected to significantly widen its user base as OpenAI moves deeper into short-form video.

The Android version mirrors the iOS app, including “Cameos,” which lets users generate videos of themselves using their own likeness. Sora also includes a TikTok-style feed for viewing and sharing clips, positioning the app as a rival to Meta’s new Vibes feature as well as platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

But Sora has battled early controversy. OpenAI restricted depictions of historical figures like Martin Luther King Jr. after users generated disrespectful deepfakes, and shifted from an opt-out to opt-in system for copyrighted characters following backlash over IP use. The company is also in a naming dispute with Cameo over its Cameos feature.

Upcoming updates will add basic editing tools, pet and object cameos, and more curated social feeds as OpenAI builds Sora into a broader entertainment platform.
