OpenAI announced a new initiative offering one year of free ChatGPT Plus to U.S. service members and veterans within 12 months of retirement or separation from the military. The program aims to support veterans as they transition to civilian life—a process that nearly half of post-9/11 veterans report finding challenging.

Developed by veterans at OpenAI, the initiative provides transitioning servicemembers access to AI-powered tools for crafting civilian-friendly resumes, preparing for interviews, understanding benefits, and planning housing, education, and finances. The offer includes access to OpenAI’s latest models, 100 example chats written by veterans, and a custom onboarding video via OpenAI Academy.

Verification is handled through SheerID, ensuring eligibility for those who have served. OpenAI said the program reflects its mission to make AI tools beneficial for all of humanity and to recognize the leadership and adaptability veterans bring to the workforce.

The company hopes the initiative will help veterans approach their next chapter with confidence and clarity, using AI to simplify the transition process.
