OpenAI is reportedly exploring the creation of consumer health products, including a generative AI-powered personal health assistant, as part of its efforts to expand beyond ChatGPT and other core technologies. The move signals OpenAI’s interest in applying large language model capabilities to the healthcare sector, a field where previous big tech initiatives have struggled to gain traction.
The company’s potential healthcare expansion follows key leadership hires. Nate Gross, cofounder of Doximity, joined OpenAI as head of healthcare strategy in June, while former Instagram executive Ashley Alexander became vice president of health products in August.
At the HLTH conference in October, Gross said ChatGPT now draws about 800 million weekly active users, many of whom use the tool to seek medical insights.
OpenAI’s entry would place it among tech giants like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, whose past attempts at health data and fitness platforms — including Google Health, Amazon Halo, and Microsoft HealthVault — ultimately saw limited success.
