OpenAI Crosses $100M in Ad Revenue with Early ChatGPT Pilot

OpenAI has surpassed $100 million in annual recurring revenue from its early advertising initiative, less than two months after launching a pilot within ChatGPT. The program targets free users and ChatGPT Go subscribers in the United States, marking a significant step in the company’s monetization strategy.

The ads appear at the bottom of chatbot responses and are designed not to influence generated answers. OpenAI has emphasized safeguards, including excluding users under 18 and restricting ads from appearing alongside sensitive topics such as politics and health.

The company is working with more than 600 advertisers and reports no measurable decline in user trust related to privacy. While approximately 85 percent of eligible users can receive ads, fewer than 20 percent are exposed to them daily, reflecting a controlled rollout focused on testing user experience.

OpenAI is also preparing to expand the pilot to additional markets, including Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The gradual expansion aligns with the company’s approach to refining ad formats and performance before broader deployment.

The move introduces a new revenue stream as competition intensifies among AI providers. Advertising has historically been a dominant business model for digital platforms, but its integration into conversational AI raises new considerations around transparency and user experience.

The early results suggest strong advertiser interest, though some partners have expressed concerns about the limited scale of the rollout. OpenAI maintains that a cautious approach is necessary to balance monetization with product integrity as AI assistants evolve into mainstream consumer platforms, even as competitors like Anthropic emphasize ad-free models focused on subscriptions and enterprise revenue.
