Google has introduced new features for its Gemini assistant that allow users to import personal context and chat history from other AI platforms. The update is designed to reduce friction when switching between AI tools and improve personalization from the outset.
The new memory import feature enables Gemini to understand user preferences, relationships, and key personal details previously shared with other assistants. Users can generate a summary of their data from another AI app and upload it into Gemini, where it is processed and stored as part of the assistant’s contextual knowledge.
In addition, Gemini now supports full chat history imports through file uploads. This allows users to transfer entire conversation threads and continue interactions without losing prior context. The functionality is part of a broader update to Gemini’s personalization system, which integrates insights from services such as Gmail, Photos, and Search when permission is granted.
Google is also rebranding its “past chats” feature as “memory,” reflecting a shift toward persistent, cross-session context management. The approach aligns with industry efforts to create more continuous and adaptive AI experiences that retain knowledge over time.
The update highlights growing competition among AI providers to offer more personalized assistants. As users interact with multiple AI systems, the ability to transfer data and maintain continuity is becoming a key differentiator in platform design and user retention strategies.
It also follows Google’s expansion of its Gemini-powered Search Live experience globally, adding voice and camera-based interactions that further integrate AI into everyday user workflows.
