Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) is launching a sweeping offer in India, providing its advanced Gemini 2.5 Pro AI platform free of cost for 18 months to over 500 million users of telecom giant Reliance Jio. The package, valued at around ₹35,100 (≈ US $396) per user, includes 2 TB of cloud storage and access to tools like NotebookLM and image/video generation models.
The move is part of a broader strategy by Google to deepen its presence in India’s huge and rapidly expanding internet market, leveraging Jio’s massive subscriber base. The rollout will begin with unlimited 5G users aged 18–25 and expand to the wider user base in India. The partnership is aligned with India’s push to become “AI-empowered,” as stated by Reliance Industries’ Chairman Mukesh Ambani.
This initiative also reflects rising competition among global AI firms for India. With rivals like OpenAI offering free premium plans and Perplexity tying up with other Indian telecom carriers, Google’s move signals a high-stakes battle to drive mass AI adoption through strategic telecom partnerships.
