AI Inbox introduces a task-oriented interface within Gmail, replacing traditional unread email counts with categorized sections such as “To-dos” and “Topics.” The system prioritizes emails from key contacts, upcoming deadlines, and actionable items like bills or meeting requests, effectively turning the inbox into a dynamic task manager.
The feature uses AI models to analyze email content and user behavior, including actions like reading, archiving, or deleting messages, to determine relevance and completion status. Google plans to add further functionality, including a “Mark as done” option, to improve workflow management.
AI Inbox is currently available only to subscribers of the Google AI Ultra plan, which costs $250 per month and includes access to advanced AI tools such as Gemini, along with expanded cloud storage and bundled services. The pricing positions the feature primarily for power users and enterprise-level productivity needs.
The rollout reflects Google’s broader strategy to embed AI across its productivity suite, focusing on automation and context-aware assistance. As email remains a core workplace tool, AI-driven prioritization and task management are emerging as key areas for differentiation among major technology platforms. This expansion also aligns with Google’s broader push in generative media, including the release of its lower-cost Veo 3.1 Lite model aimed at high-volume AI video generation use cases.
