Barnsley, in South Yorkshire, has been designated the UK’s first Tech Town, positioning the former industrial center as a national “trailblazer” for applying AI to everyday public services. The initiative will see artificial intelligence deployed across schools, colleges, local businesses, and parts of the NHS, with the goal of improving productivity, access, and service delivery.

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said Barnsley would serve as a national blueprint for responsible AI adoption, testing how the technology can support learning outcomes, reduce teacher workloads, help businesses scale, and streamline healthcare services. Planned pilots include AI-assisted hospital check-ins and triage, as well as education and edtech tools in schools and at Barnsley College.

Major technology firms including Microsoft, Cisco, and Adobe have pledged support, while Barnsley Council will offer free AI and digital skills training through local institutions. Officials say the designation is one of the most significant economic investments in the town’s history, aimed at securing long-term growth and positioning Barnsley as a leading regional digital hub.
