Apple is preparing to expand Siri’s capabilities by allowing third-party AI assistants to handle user queries, according to Bloomberg report. The planned change, expected in iOS 27, would end Siri’s current reliance on a single external provider and introduce a more open, multi-assistant ecosystem.
Under the proposed system, users could select from a range of AI services, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, Microsoft’s Copilot, and other chatbot platforms. The functionality would be enabled through a new feature known as “Extensions,” allowing installed apps to integrate directly with Siri.
The update would shift control to users, enabling them to choose which AI service processes specific queries rather than relying on a default assistant. Apple is also expected to generate revenue through subscription payments processed via its App Store billing system.
The move is separate from Apple’s reported collaboration with Google to enhance Siri’s underlying capabilities using Gemini models. While that partnership focuses on core infrastructure, the Extensions feature would allow direct interaction with multiple external AI services.
The initiative reflects Apple’s broader effort to catch up in artificial intelligence after delays in rolling out previously announced Siri upgrades. The company is also reportedly working on deeper integrations across its ecosystem, including potential updates to Spotlight and standalone assistant features.
