OpenAI has declared a “code red” as it shifts internal priorities to strengthening the core ChatGPT experience. CEO Sam Altman notified employees in an internal memo that the company will temporarily redirect resources away from new business initiatives — most notably its planned rollout of advertising inside ChatGPT — and toward improving performance, reliability, and security.

The advertising program, which OpenAI had been testing quietly through formats like shopping promotions and sponsored recommendations, had never been formally announced. Ads would have represented OpenAI’s first major push into ad-supported monetization, complementing subscription revenue from ChatGPT Plus and enterprise contracts.

Quality Over Immediate Revenue

The pause signals a strategic shift. With competitors including Google rapidly integrating ads into their AI products, OpenAI appears to be choosing long-term user trust over short-term monetization. Under early testing scenarios, ChatGPT users might have needed to choose between retaining personalized AI features or turning off memory to avoid ads — a dynamic that risked undermining the product’s user experience.

The “code red” reflects broader concerns about ChatGPT’s competitive positioning in a fast-evolving market. Analysts say the decision to delay advertising suggests OpenAI believes improving ChatGPT’s underlying performance is more urgent than launching new revenue streams.

No Timeline for Ads to Return

OpenAI has not provided a new timeline for revisiting advertising. For now, the company is concentrating engineering and research efforts on making ChatGPT more accurate, stable, and secure. Subscription and enterprise services remain unaffected and continue to constitute the company’s primary revenue sources.
